Global Rent A Scope Spotlight:
Introducing G15 extended NIR - A red giant is born in Moorook, Southern Australia
June 9th 2010 - GRAS is proud to announce its launch of a world class system with extended near infra-red vision. An f/3.8 16 inch (0.4m) telescope is equipped with a near infra-red (NIR) FLI backlit camera with full range filter choices. - ProLine E2V CCD47-10-1-109 Deep Depletion Fused Silica CCD Camera. It is a back-illuminated (contrary to front-illuminated, where photon absorption is higher) and has an IR-enhanced spectral response.

Due to the lack of sensitivity of Si CCD camera in the NIR, this region is still largely unexplored by amateur astronomers and imagers. G15 closes this gap and opens new horizons of what can be imaged in the NIR. It is now possible to examine many objects with extended filter / color compositions. And to explore regions highly obscured by dust in the plane of the Milky Way or to explore faint, extended red emission (ERE) nebulae. Uncover stars and other details in nebulae such as M27, the famous dumbbell. Mix NIR with RGB of galaxies and globular clusters to enhance the appearance of cooler stars. And to utilize the clear filter for the entire spectral range to unveil it all at once. These are only some of many new possibilities.
The idea was launched by Dr. Christian Sasse, who already owns two telescopes with GRAS in New Mexico and has now added the G15 red giant to GRAS. Christian has been working closely with Arnie Rosner and Brad Moore on this idea for many months which took careful preparation and research.
